Boats and yachts made of wood are valuable, often older and beloved treasures. Anyone who owns or wants to buy such a wooden boat will sooner or later come across the important question of care and maintenance in order to preserve its value and beauty in the long term. In particular, above the waterline, wooden boats and yachts are constantly exposed to a wide range of weather conditions. On the one hand, there is the strong sunlight on the water, which can quickly dry out unprotected wood. Wooden surfaces also have to withstand heavy rain and hail, dry winds, temperature fluctuations and frost. Also, suitable for indoor and outdoor garden furniture.

The advantages of Kronen® yacht and boat varnish
We would like to introduce you to our high-quality Kronen® yacht and boat varnish, which has been specially developed for the long-term protection of wooden surfaces above the waterline. This tried and tested special varnish is ideal for protecting and sealing all structures on boats and yachts, such as deckhouses or railings. Our yacht varnish falls under the category of synthetic resin varnishes, which are known for their high resistance, and has been specially optimised for use on boats and yachts. The single-component boat varnish based on a PU-alkyd seal is extremely weather resistant and has very high UV protection. The beautiful and boat-typical wood grain is retained because it is a colourless clear varnish. As already mentioned, you can see the condition of the painted areas at any time and plan a repeat coat in good time before the wood is damaged. The surface of the coated wood is glossy, giving your boat or yacht a particularly beautiful and well-protected shine in the sunlight. This coveted ‘wet effect’, which makes the treated wood appear somewhat darker and particularly emphasises the wood grain, is referred to in specialist circles as ‘firing’ the wood.
How is Kronen® yacht and boat varnish applied?
Our synthetic-resin-based yacht and boat varnish consists of only one component and is already ready for use. It can therefore be applied immediately without mixing or diluting. Depending on the surface, the paint is simply applied with a roller or brush. When applying with a roller, you should make sure that enough varnish gets onto the surface; this is referred to as a ‘rich’ coat. A major time and cost saving is that a special primer is not required. After a short drying time, the second coat can be applied. For larger areas, the boat varnish can even be sprayed. It is available in three container sizes, which avoids unnecessary leftover stock. Together with the good yield, high durability and the fact that no primer is needed, this results in an excellent price-performance ratio.
Incidentally, Kronen® yacht and boat varnish is also suitable for protecting wooden garden furniture both indoors and outdoors.

Surface preparation
- Check moisture content:
- For softwoods, the residual moisture should not exceed 12%.
- For hardwoods, the residual moisture should not exceed 15%.
- The moisture content should be measured using a moisture meter at the appropriate depth in the wood.
- Cleaning:
- The substrate must be clean and free from dust, grease and wax.
- Preparation of existing coatings:
- Sand existing coatings.
- Test unknown existing coatings to see if they can be recoated.
Always sand thoroughly dried primers and intermediate coats.
Coating
Two to three coats of Kronen® Yacht and Boat Varnish should be applied to ensure optimal protection and coverage.
Note: When using a roller, it is essential to apply a full coat of varnish to avoid the formation of bubbles.
The previous coat should be reworked within 24 hours, otherwise intermediate sanding will be necessary.
