Simply paint your bathtub with bathtub paint. Replacing an old bathtub is labour-intensive and causes dirt, dust and noise. JAEGER bathtub paint is the real alternative: after coating the bathtub, which is simply painted on, the enamel or acrylic tub looks like new! JAEGER bathtub paint is available in five colours: in the sanitaryware colours pure white, alpine white, bahama beige, manhattan grey and pergamon.

The high-quality bathtub paint from JAEGER is used to renovate and coat bathtubs and shower trays made of steel and enamel. This solvent-free two-component varnish cures to form a high-gloss and extremely durable varnish film. The JAEGER bathtub paint set acts as a top coat and sealant in a single step and is sufficient for a standard-sized bathtub or two shower trays. Thanks to its high covering power, one coat is usually sufficient for an even surface; only dark surfaces may require a second coat of paint (additional set). For acrylic bathtubs, the JAEGER acrylic bathtub primer is also required (not included in the set).

The bathtub paint professional set consists of:

  • 2-component paint (master batch and hardener)
  • paintbrush
  • short-pile roller
  • paint tray
  • descaler
  • cleaner
  • dust cloth
  • four sheets of sandpaper in two grits
  • processing instructions

Processing instructions for bathtub paint

1. preparation

1.1 Maintain temperature

The varnish components must be stored at a temperature of approx. +22°C for at least 24 hours before processing so that the varnish can be processed smoothly.

For the best possible painting result, the room temperature and the temperature of the tub must be between +22° C and +25° C during processing and throughout the entire curing time of 5 days. A relative humidity of 50% is optimal, which is most easily achieved by heating.

1.2 Remove sources of dust before painting the bathtub

Remove all sources of dust, such as towels, curtains, etc., and wear lint-free clothing during application. Avoid creating dust due to air currents.

1.3 Masking the bathtub

Mask off surfaces that are not to be coated. Cover the bath filler with a plastic bag to prevent water droplets from falling into the tub. The siphon must not be painted over and must either be removed or dried with a hair dryer and masked before painting begins. Old silicone joints are either also masked or removed and re-grouted later.

Attention: Remove silicone before painting

Silicone acts as a separating agent, paint cannot adhere to it. If the silicone joint is removed, silicone fragments must not contaminate the surface to be coated. It is therefore best to line the entire surface of the tub with film and tape the edges of the film close (approx. 2 cm) to the silicone edge. Then cut out the silicone completely with a sharp knife. After that, thoroughly sand the joint area and clean it with a cloth soaked in silicone remover or white spirits. Change the cloth several times.

2. clean and descale

2.1 Descaling the bathtub before coating

Dissolve the contents of the descaling sachet (citric acid granules) in 2 litres of water. Caution: Avoid contact with skin and eyes. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with water.

Close the bath drain and pour the solution into the bath. Use a sponge or a coarse brush to spread the solution over the entire surface several times and leave to work for about 10 minutes.

Then rinse the bath with clean water and clean as follows.

2.2 Cleaning the bathtub with a special cleaner

Mix approx. 1 litre of JAEGER bath and tile cleaner (2 litres: set 6.8 m²) with water and use it to clean the tub with a sponge or brush. (Caution: protect eyes and skin from contact. Household gloves are recommended. In case of eye contact, rinse immediately with water).

Then rinse the tub with clean water.

2.3 Sanding the bathtub

Sand the entire tub using wet sanding, first with coarse sandpaper (P120) and then with fine sandpaper (P320). Rough spots must be sanded until they are completely smooth. Rinse with clean water. Allow the tub to dry thoroughly. Reduce increased humidity by airing and, if necessary, heat the room. Note the tub temperature (+22°C to +25°C)! To ensure that no silicone remains, rub the entire surface of the dry tub with a cloth soaked in methylated spirits.

2.4 Repairing damaged areas in the bathtub

Repair any damaged areas on the tub with polyester or epoxy resin filler. After hardening, sand evenly with fine sandpaper (P320) while wet. Rinse off sanding residue and allow to dry. Allow increased humidity to evaporate. Note the tub temperature!

2.5 Dusting the dry bathtub

Wipe the dried tub with the dust cloth to remove any remaining dust particles.

2.6 Only for acrylic: Priming acrylic surfaces

Stir the JAEGER acrylic tub primer and pour it into the colour tub. Apply quickly, thinly and evenly with a brush or roller in a single operation to avoid drying marks. Allow to dry for 16 hours. Thoroughly clean the brush, roller and paint tray with water immediately after applying the primer. Allow to dry completely before using as a top coat. Then paint as described below.

3. painting the bathtub

Pour the contents of the hardener bottle completely into the paint tin, stir the mixture intensively with the stir stick for at least 2 minutes and then pour it into the paint tray. Stir briefly again there. Avoid contact with skin and eyes!
The mixed material can be easily spread for about 50 minutes.

Use the brush to quickly apply the paint to the surface of the tub. Pre-coat and prime any areas repaired with putty. To avoid runs and drips, do not apply the paint too thickly.
Allocated working time: approx. 20 minutes.

Only place the roller so far on the roller frame that the roller cannot rub. To achieve a uniform layer thickness, use the roller to evenly distribute the paint in both a lengthwise and crosswise direction.
Estimated working time: approx. 20 minutes

4. Important after painting

The coating is dust-resistant after about 5 hours. Avoid drafts and dust during this time.
The adhesive tape can be removed and the silicone joints can be regrouted after about 8-24 hours.

For five days after the bathtub has been coated, keep the room temperature constant at at least +22°C and avoid exposure to water. After that, the tub can be used normally again.
The first time you bathe or shower in the tub, start by running lukewarm water into it and then slowly increase the water temperature to avoid stress cracks.

Care instructions – bathtub paint

  • Use standard mild household cleaning agents, e.g. neutral cleaning agents (do not use scouring agents).
  • Mud baths and medicinal bath additives with colouring can discolour the coating. Avoid contact with textile and hair dyes, tints and other coloured objects, and do not soak heavily discoloured items of laundry in the bathtub.
  • Avoid leaving water standing on the coating for long periods of time, and remove bath inlays or similar items immediately after bathing or showering so that the painted surface can dry completely after exposure to water.
